Project Community Strengthening
This project is in the unique position of being able to reach out to many artistic communities in BC, flamenco and non-flamenco alike. It speaks to traditionalists and innovators and has a high entertainment value for its patrons. Not only does this project have staying power, it generates its own momentum. Because the project will showcase a wide variety of artistic genres, the audience is exposed to flamenco in a rich array of manifestations, through the voices of some of Vancouver’s most talented musicians, dancers, and choreographers.
Past performances and collaborations have been in conduction with:
Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Academy and
Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre
Mentors Oscar Nieto and Kasandra “La China” came together to form AMFDA over ten years ago and have become an inextricable part of the North American flamenco scene. Oscar Nieto has choreographed for “Raíces y Alas” and both he and Kasandra “La China” will perform in this year’s production of “Raíces y Alas: COLORES”.
Caravan World Rhythms
Caravan brings the world and the world of music to Vancouver. Caravan is co-produced this 2013’s production of “Raíces y Alas: COLORES”.
Elvira Yebes | Design & Photography
Elvira’s work has been featured in Dance magazine and in promotional and website materials for flamenco companies across British Columbia. She has a keen eye and an intuitive sense that enable her to capture the moment with creative brilliance. She joins “Raíces y Alas” as a photographer and graphic designer.
Firehall Arts Centre: BC Buds Program
BC Buds offers grants to local artists of all genres. Audiences of all ages to experience theatre, dance, film, music and inter-disciplinary pieces in unorthodox settings.
Flamenco.ca and Peña Buleria
Pirouz Ebadypour “de Caspio” is the heart of both of these projects. He has not only invited some of the artists of “Raíces y Alas” to perform with him in the Jondo Flamenco Festival, but also contributed his talents as a Persian flamenco singer to the programming of “Raíces y Alas”.
Heart of the City Festival – Barrio Flamenco
Mashregh (East) is a musical group combining the haunting and passionate flamenco music with the spiritual lyrics of Persian poetry. With Farnaz Ohadi as the singer and the musical director at the helm, Mashregh strives to create meditative melodies that transcend Earthly boundaries and transport the soul to the East and beyond. Colaborations between artists of “Raíces y Alas” and Mashregh are frequent.
